Croatia Bus Road Trip. Fifth Stop Skradin and Krka National Park

Sometimes, you just need to give a day space and time to unfold from a tightly closed blossom to a beautiful flower.

The most majestic of the waterfalls is Skradinski Buk.

Or, to rephrase it less poetically: I need to stop being such a nagging old bat.

Skradin, despite being a cute little town, didn't promise to be a big success at first: I misinterpreted the folksy service of my hotel, the waitress at the restaurant where I finally had dinner screwed me over with the wine - I just wanted to visit the Krka National Park and get out of there as soon as possible.
And then miraculously everything came up Renata.

It doesn't need much imagination to figure how people at the little town of Skradin used to live off the land not too many years ago.

The time stands still, but tourism is moving on. In the afternoon on Ulica Fra Luje Maruna, the main street of Skradin.

Along the charming main road - an about three meters / 10 feet broad way - pun totally intended - are small shops and cafés and every here and there is a grandma or a grandpa selling figues, almonds, or Žižula, a local fruit looking like an olive, bursting of vitamin C.

Žižula, the local specialty, that I first mistook for cherries, then for olives, and at the end I realized that I simply didn't know what it was. Anyway, it's the pride of the village and sold at every corner.

The Žižula trees are found in every orchard around town, along with pomegranates, grapevines, apples, pears - you just name it.

All this could be so secluded and serene and just nice - if there wasn't one of Croatia's main natural attractions about four kilometers, a bit over three miles, north of Skradin: Krka National Park.

What makes a visit to the Skradinski Buk extra special is the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the ice-cold waters.

The many visitors to the National Park, hence to Skradin, which is one of the main gateways, cause a funny mix of traditional Dalmatian rural life and boomtown tourist destination. That posh yachts are anchoring at the small port adds to the culture clash.

The Krka Park is much, much smaller than Plitvice. It has a whole different charm - just like the mountains surrounding it.
Here, everything is stone. I was actually amazed how much greenery is growing on stone. The mountains are densely covered with all different kinds of trees - and on the ground, you see the grey stone instead of brown soil. Very unusual. And very beautiful.

What do you need a green thumb for when flowers are growing from stones?!

While in Plitvice I was far more impressed by the waters in the pools, in Krka it's more about the waterfalls. And there are some old cottages where you can learn about rural life in the area which gives the whole complex a cozy feel.

The upper part of the Skradinski Bok.

So here I go again, standing in line for a ticket, eventually standing in line for the shuttle boat - a trip that's actually very nice. Then walking in line with a large group of other visitors. You never walk alone.
Stop - that's not true: If you don't take the shuttle boat back - just like almost everybody else - and walk instead on the trail along the Visovačko Jezero, the Visovac Lake, back to Skradin, you have at least one to one and a half hours to yourself; it's you and the incredible nature and a handful like-minded wanderers.

While almost everybody else was sitting in the same boat....

...I enjoyed the lush greenery...bye:myself.

So since already this walk was very soothing, it got even better when I spotted a small beach on the river: A woman reading a newspaper, teenagers playing some silly ball games, an elderly couple swimming in the ice-cold water - how can it get any better?! I spread my towel out, took a nap and eventually a dip - and life was just good; really good.

Perfect moment for an unexpected swim in the clear'n'cool river.

However, the nicest part was when back at the hotel, I ran into the couple that I had met yesterday at Plitvice - the people I had sent to the secluded trail.
Guess what, they are staying at the same hotel.
Oh my gosh, how I had needed them yesterday evening when I hated everything and everybody here. Anyway, it wasn't too late for a couple of drinks and many laughs - and I left Skradin in an excellent mood.

Today, there won't be a quick side-step in time.

Firstly, I'm tired and after finishing my second glass of wine, I need to go to bed.

Secondly, the topic of the next side-step in my time does match tomorrows stop much better, so - thanx for your patience.

Note to the curious reader: Like I did during my former like e. g. Cambodia, while on the road, I'll be posting little stories and reflections.
At the end of the entire tour, there will be an extended travel guide with all the relevant information including addresses, links etc.
Until then, just share some thoughts and special moments with me.
